Structure of the English Absolute Construction

The paper has been published in the proceedings of the scientific forum for PhD students, organized by the Faculty of Pedagogy at the South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad. The round table “Modern Challenges Facing PhD Education” took place on 18 November 2011 at the University Centre “Bachinovo” in the city of Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria


The absolute construction (AC) has a binary structure, its first constituent being predominantly expressed by a nominal phrase (NP) and the other one – by a verbal non-finite form or a non-verbal part of speech. The present article deals with the structural types of ACs in Modern English, as well as with the nature, structure, types and grammatical functions of its constituents.
